An Economical Sound Recording Solution

Recipe:

  • a computer (Windows/Mac/Lunix)
  • audio capturing device (M-Audio or built-in)
  • microphone or guitar, etc....
  • Audacity a open source sound editing program

First, download and install Audacity or a similar recording software (see below) Chances are, your computer already has a mic input. If you want a pro setup, get your hands on a "balanced" audio deivce with XLR or 1/4'' mic inputs. A good, economical solution is the M-Audio Mobile Pre. Audadicty is a powerfull app, and is open source and cross platform. Along with a device like the Mobile Pre and a mic, you can record, mix and edit.

Tips for Great sound:

  • Don't use the built-in 1/8" heaphone sized mic input.
  • Get you hands on a really good mic that uses phantom power.
  • Get a audio capturing device with XLR inputs.
